Spill-Sorb

Spill-Sorb is a powder made from arctic sphagnum peat, which has been treated to remove most of the water contained in its vegetable fibres. During the process the character of the peat changes and it becomes oleophilic (oil loving) and hydrophobic (water repelling).

Spill-SorbTM is a remarkable natural product. Spread it onto any oil – motor, cooking or lubricating – and it will absorb the liquid by encapsulation within seconds. The same happens with wet blood, paint, most acids (including concentrated sulphuric acid), caustic soda, insecticides and a vast majority of other solvents.

Amazingly, Spill-SorbTM does not leach and will never release the oil. One litre of Spill-SorbTM will soak up and encapsulate about one litre of oil clean to the hand. In addition, Spill-SorbTM absorbs vapours, reducing the explosive level by up to 90%. For example, in a room where acetone has been spilled, a handful of Spill-SorbTM will rapidly soak in the fumes enabling you to breathe again.

Spill-SorbTM is available in powder form (to be directly applied onto spills) or in specially made up Soaker Pads, which are designed to soak up old oil from standing machinery, grease inceptor traps as well as contain minor spillages.

Spill-SorbTM attributes

Spill-SorbTM has many unique properties:

  1. Fast fact:
    When ‘loaded’ with diesel, fish oil, paint or battery acid, Spill-SorbTM Soaker Pads can be buried for a few months while the encapsulated pollutant biodegrades. Spill-SorbTM eventually reverts to natural sphagnum peat moss, which is ideal for nurturing the garden.
  1. It polishes effluent after maturation ponds, degrading the final COD and improving the final quality;
  2. It acts as a filter that snatches oil from water flowing off garage forecourts;
  3. It removes most heavy metals from industrial wastewater;
  4. It removes oil from vehicle wash waste, permitting it to be re-used; and
  5. It is the best way to soak up oil spills on land or sea.
